01 / Is This Trip Right for You?

If you're someone who enjoys staying active, loves the outdoors, and wants to explore Sri Lanka at handlebar level, this journey is for you. You don’t need to be a seasoned cyclist—just comfortable riding a bike for a few hours and open to a bit of adventure along the way.

Our cycling routes mostly follow peaceful tarmac roads that wind through villages, farmland, coastlines, and ancient cities. There may be short stretches of gravel or bumpy surfaces, but nothing too technical. If you're unfamiliar with gentle descents or uneven terrain, we recommend a few practice rides before the trip.

Sri Lanka’s landscapes are naturally undulating, and the warm tropical climate adds to the physical challenge. A basic level of fitness will help you enjoy each day’s ride without feeling overly tired. That said, you’ll always have support from your guide—and we build in time for breaks, local snacks, and cooling off when needed.

We ride as a group, but never in a race. Your leader will set a comfortable pace, and if you want to skip a section, we’ll help you adjust with ease.

Be prepared for a mix of sunny days, humid afternoons, and the occasional rain shower. Bring your sense of flexibility along with your sunscreen and water bottle.

Not keen on high places? The optional Sigiriya Rock hike involves a lot of steps and narrow ledges, so you’re welcome to sit that one out and enjoy another relaxing activity instead.

If you want to take on the full route with less physical effort, we offer e-bike upgrades—a great way to enjoy the journey while keeping things easy on your legs.

02 / Physical Preparation & Cycling Distances

Our cycling adventures are crafted for travelers with a basic to moderate level of fitness. Since you'll be riding for several consecutive days in Sri Lanka's warm tropical climate, it's a good idea to prepare your body in advance to enjoy the journey fully.

We suggest building up your stamina before the trip. Outdoor cycling is the best preparation, but any regular cardio activity—such as brisk walking, swimming, or using an indoor bike—will help. Try taking a few longer rides ahead of time to get comfortable with being in the saddle for a few hours at a stretch.

This isn't a competitive ride, so there's no need to rush. Let your body adapt naturally to the heat, terrain, and rhythm of each day. We’ll pause frequently for water breaks, scenic photo stops, and cultural encounters along the way.

You don’t need advanced biking skills, but you should feel confident riding on your own and in a group setting. Our guides are there to support you and make sure everyone feels safe on the road.

Cycling distances

Our rides typically range between 25 km and 40 km per day, depending on the day's route and the group’s pace. Terrain varies from smooth village roads to occasional gravel paths or mildly uneven rural tracks, offering a mix of gentle challenges and scenic enjoyment.

To make the most of the cooler mornings, rides usually start early. Some days may require early starts—occasionally as early as 6:00 AM—especially when we have longer routes or want to avoid cycling during intense midday heat. If there's a need to leave even earlier to visit a key cultural site, we’ll travel by vehicle first and begin cycling when there’s sufficient daylight. In all cases, proper lighting and safety measures are ensured.

Each morning, your guide will brief you clearly on the day’s terrain, expected conditions, and timings, so you're always prepared and in control of your ride.

03 / Joining Point & Arrival

Joining Point

Your cycling adventure officially begins in Negombo, a coastal town known for its golden beaches, lively markets, and proximity to Sri Lanka’s international airport.

We’ll share your exact hotel name and contact details after you confirm your booking. All guests will stay in a comfortable and well-located property in Negombo that provides easy access to restaurants, the seaside, and your first cycling routes.

We suggest arriving a little early—perhaps a day in advance—so you can rest from your travels, explore the area, and settle in before we start riding. Our group welcome briefing is scheduled for 6:00 PM on Day 1 at the hotel. This is your chance to meet your guide and fellow travelers, ask questions, and get ready for the journey ahead.

If you'd like help arranging your transfer from the airport, we can assist—just send us your arrival details at least two weeks before your trip.

Arrival & Transfer Details

Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB) is the closest international gateway to our starting location in Negombo. The drive to the hotel typically takes 20–30 minutes, depending on traffic.

If you've arranged an airport pickup through us, look for your Sri Lanka Cycling Squad driver near the arrivals area. They’ll be holding a personalized sign. If you experience any delays or can’t find your driver, we’ll provide emergency contact details in your final travel pack.

Prefer to arrange your own ride? Taxis are easy to find at the airport. A trip to Negombo generally costs around LKR 5,000 (USD 15). If you're traveling from central Colombo, the journey may take over an hour and cost closer to LKR 10,000 (USD 30).

All important contact numbers, instructions, and hotel info will be shared with you once your place is confirmed.

04 / On-Tour Support, Emergency Contacts & Finishing Point

At Sri Lanka Cycling Squad, we strive to make your journey smooth, memorable, and worry-free. However, we understand that unexpected issues can arise when exploring new places.

If something doesn’t feel right during the tour—whether it’s a concern, a question, or a minor hiccup—please speak directly to your cycling guide or tour leader as soon as possible. Most situations can be resolved quickly on the spot, and we’re committed to finding the best solution without disrupting your experience.

If your guide is unable to assist or the issue needs further attention, you can request to contact their immediate supervisor or our local operations team.

We strongly encourage you to raise any concerns while the trip is ongoing so we can address them in real time. Once the tour ends, our ability to assist becomes limited.

We are based in Sri Lanka and operate on Sri Lanka Standard Time (GMT+5:30). Our response hours are between 8:00 AM and 6:00 PM local time, and we are committed to getting back to you as soon as possible—typically within 24 hours. If you contact us outside of these hours, please rest assured that your message has been received and will be addressed promptly the next working day.

Once you book your trip, you’ll receive a full confirmation email with:

  • Emergency contact numbers
  • Local office details
  • Your guide’s contact info (available 24 hours prior to start)

Please make sure we have your emergency contact details as well.

Finishing point

Your journey concludes in the vibrant city of Colombo—Sri Lanka’s bustling commercial capital filled with colonial charm, colorful markets, and coastal views.

At the end of your tour, we’ll transfer you to a centrally located hotel in Colombo. The specific hotel and contact details will be shared with you upon booking confirmation.

If you’d like to extend your stay, Colombo offers a wide range of attractions including the Dutch Hospital precinct, Pettah markets, art galleries, and seaside promenades. It’s a great place to relax or explore before heading home.

Departure transfers

If you’d like help booking your transfer to Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB), we can assist—just let us know your departure details at least 14 days before the trip ends.

If you have arranged a transfer through us, your cycling guide will confirm your pickup time the day before the tour concludes.

Prefer to arrange your own transfer? You can easily book a taxi via your hotel or through a ride-hailing app. The journey from central Colombo to the airport typically takes 60–90 minutes depending on traffic and costs around LKR 10,000 (approx. USD 30).

Full departure details and emergency contact information will be included in your final travel pack.

05 / Itinerary Flexibility & Optional Activities

Itinerary disclaimer

We aim to deliver the best experience possible, but sometimes travel requires flexibility. Our routes and daily activities are carefully planned, yet may be adjusted due to weather, road conditions, special events, or other unforeseen circumstances. Your cycling guide will always communicate any changes clearly and ensure your safety and enjoyment remain the top priority.

We recommend checking your final itinerary and travel pack before departure to stay informed of any updates.

Optional activities

During your journey, you’ll come across optional activities that enhance your experience—from cultural visits to wildlife safaris or scenic treks. These options may vary by location and availability. You can choose to book them through your guide, on-site providers, or in some cases, pre-arrange them before the tour.

Optional activities are not included in the standard package price and may require additional payment. While we can recommend providers that meet our safety and ethical standards, any third-party activity you choose to participate in is done at your own discretion.

Please speak to your cycling guide at the welcome meeting or during the trip if there’s something you’d like to experience—we’ll do our best to make it happen whenever possible.

As always, we uphold responsible travel practices, so any activity that goes against local regulations or ethical standards won’t be promoted or arranged by our team.

06 / Essential Booking & Travel Information

Please provide your height when booking to ensure we assign you the correct bicycle size. Without this information ahead of arrival, we may not be able to guarantee a proper fit.

To maintain the highest safety and quality, we recommend avoiding tours or excursions offered by unofficial individuals in or around hotels.

If you wish to guarantee a private room throughout the trip, a single supplement is available. Please request this during booking.

E-bikes are available in limited quantities on a request basis. Advance booking is required and subject to confirmation.

For hygiene and safety, we recommend you bring your own bike helmet from home, as local rentals are not available.

For train segments, early booking is essential. We require your passport details at least 60 days in advance to secure seats. If your passport changes, please update us immediately.

We occasionally offer a community snack and hydration kitty. This is optional and helps cover items like fresh fruits, water, and quick local refreshments. Your guide will explain it further on Day 1.

07 / Passports, Visas & Entry Requirements

Passport

Ensure your passport is valid for at least 6 months from your arrival date in Sri Lanka. Passport details must exactly match your booking information for ticketing and entry purposes. Carry a photocopy of your passport and leave a copy with a family member or friend.

Visa requirements

Sri Lanka requires most travelers to obtain an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) in advance. It’s your responsibility to check and secure the correct visa based on your nationality. Visit the official Sri Lanka immigration site or consult your nearest consulate well before travel.

08 / Health, Hydration & Food

General health

All participants should be in good health to enjoy the tour safely. If you’re feeling unwell before your trip, please seek medical advice and contact us to explore your options.

We strongly recommend visiting your doctor for up-to-date travel vaccinations and health advice prior to travel. Carry your required medication in original packaging along with any prescriptions.

Cycling health

Sri Lanka’s climate is warm and humid, which increases the risk of dehydration during physical activity. Even on cooler days, you may sweat more than you’re used to. Make a habit of sipping water regularly—don’t wait until you’re thirsty. Adding electrolytes to your water can help replenish essential minerals.

We take frequent breaks for hydration and provide refill opportunities throughout the day. Still, it's your responsibility to monitor your fluid intake and overall wellbeing.

Food and dietary requirements

Sri Lanka is known for its flavorful cuisine, and you’ll have plenty of opportunities to try local dishes. We’ll provide a mix of included meals and time to explore food options on your own.

Our guides will suggest great local restaurants or eateries along the way. We typically eat as a group to enjoy a wider variety of food and share the experience, but you’re always free to dine independently.

If you have special dietary needs, please let us know in advance so we can accommodate your preferences where possible.

09 / Accommodation

Where You’ll Stay: Our Accommodation Approach

All 13 nights of your journey will be spent in handpicked hotels that reflect both comfort and Sri Lankan charm. We prioritize well-maintained, cyclist-friendly accommodations that provide a relaxing space after each day’s ride. Most of our hotels offer modern amenities including air-conditioned rooms, private bathrooms, and access to Wi-Fi. Some of our lodging partners are of higher quality than those used by typical group tours, ensuring a memorable and restful experience.

Alternative accommodation

In rare situations where our preferred hotel is fully booked, we may arrange similar standard alternatives. Any changes will always be communicated in advance, and we strive to maintain the same level of comfort and service throughout.

Room sharing

Our tours are based on twin-share rooms. If you’re travelling solo and haven’t booked a single supplement, you’ll be paired with another guest of the same gender. On rare occasions, bathroom facilities may be shared or rooms may be occupied by guests on another of our itineraries.

Early check-ins

We do our best to coordinate early hotel check-ins when we arrive before the standard check-in time. If this isn’t possible, we’ll store your luggage securely and give you time to explore the area until your room is ready.

Pre- or post-tour nights

If you've arranged accommodation before or after the trip, it may differ slightly from our standard hotels, and a room change may be required. We’ll always assist in making the transition smooth.

Air conditioning

All accommodations on this tour include ceiling fans or air conditioning. The majority have both, although in some locations one or the other may be more common.

10 / Your Ride, Bicycles & Road Support

The primary mode of transport on this tour is by bicycle, with distances ranging between 25–40 km per day. Our fleet includes modern, well-maintained mountain bikes and optional e-bikes for those seeking extra support.

Included bicycles

We partner with a leading local supplier to provide high-quality bicycles for your ride. Models include:

  • Scott Aspect 960 – 29" wheels, hydraulic disc brakes, front suspension
  • Giant Talon 3 – 29" wheels, hydraulic disc brakes, front suspension
  • Sunspeed Zero – 29" wheels, hydraulic disc brakes, front suspension
  • Sunspeed One – 29" wheels, hydraulic disc brakes, front suspension, 9-speed gears

E-bike option

E-bikes are available on request and subject to availability. We currently offer:

  • 2024 WALTX Spark 3 (Medium & Large)
  • 2023 E Hound (Small, Medium & Large)

All e-bikes are pedal-assist models equipped with disc brakes, front suspension, and 7-speed gearing. The assigned model will depend on your height and availability. Please request your e-bike well in advance to confirm a booking.

Support vehicle

For longer distances, backup, or rest days, we have a dedicated support vehicle that follows the group for most of the journey. It carries your main luggage, spare parts, and provides access to snacks and water. You can also store a daypack in the vehicle and access it during scheduled stops.

To reduce single-use plastic, a large water container is available on board for refills. We recommend bringing your own reusable water bottle.

Other transport

  • Train – for scenic connections between key regions
  • Private vehicle – to access areas not suitable for cycling or during early starts
  • Jeep – for the included wildlife safari experience

Every effort is made to ensure all transport is comfortable, timely, and aligned with our goal of low-impact, responsible travel.

11 / Bike Use & Rider Responsibility

When using a bicycle provided by us or hired locally, riders are expected to treat the equipment with care. You are responsible for returning the bike in the same condition you received it (normal wear and tear expected). Please notify the supplier immediately if the bicycle is lost, stolen, or damaged during use.

Bikes must always be secured when not in use. If lost or stolen, you may be liable for replacement costs. Any damage resulting from misuse may incur repair charges.

Bicycles remain the property of the supplier and may not be resold, rented to others, or otherwise transferred. For safety reasons, bicycles must not be used while under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

12 / Money, Meals, Kitty, Tipping & Contingency Funds

Spending wisely on tour

Every traveller’s spending habits are unique, so it's best to plan according to your preferences. While most major trip costs are covered, we recommend budgeting for optional meals, drinks, tips, personal expenses, and souvenirs. Refer to your itinerary for a breakdown of what's included versus what you’ll cover.

Currency in Sri Lanka

The official currency is the Sri Lankan Rupee (LKR). Cash is the most common form of payment, especially outside major cities. Credit and debit cards are widely accepted in ATMs and at larger establishments in urban areas, but it’s wise to carry some cash for small shops and rural areas.

We advise checking the exchange rate close to your travel date. You can exchange foreign currency at the airport, local banks, or authorised money changers. ATMs are commonly available in most towns.

Meals not included

While several meals are included, you’ll also have opportunities to dine independently and explore Sri Lanka’s culinary diversity. A realistic daily food budget for non-included meals is around USD 10–15 per day.

Snack and water kitty (optional)

On Day 1, your guide may offer the option to join a snack and hydration kitty, typically USD 50 per person. This covers shared costs for bottled water, fruit, local snacks, energy boosters, jeep safari tips, hotel porter tips, and occasional roadside refreshments throughout the tour.

If you choose not to join the kitty, but would still like access to shared bottled water during rides and hotel stays, you may be asked to contribute a small amount to help cover water expenses. The kitty is optional and managed transparently, with any unused funds refunded at the end of the trip.

Tipping guidelines

Tipping is a thoughtful way to acknowledge great service and is appreciated throughout Sri Lanka's tourism industry. While always optional, the following suggested amounts help ensure fairness and appreciation across the team:

  • Support Crew Tip (Total for Tour): To thank your dedicated team—bus driver (14 days), bike technician/truck driver (10 days), and sweep rider/assistant—a recommended collective tip of USD 60–84 per traveller helps acknowledge their essential support throughout the journey.
  • Guide Tip (Per Day): Your guide plays a vital role in your safety, enjoyment, and cultural understanding. A suggested tip of USD 5–7 per traveller per day reflects appreciation for their continuous effort.

These contributions can be made individually or via a group kitty organised during the trip. You are free to adjust the amount based on your personal experience. Please use clean notes and avoid coins or damaged currency.

Contingency funds

While we plan every journey with care, unforeseen events can arise. These may include extreme weather, strikes, transport delays, or temporary route changes. We recommend having access to an additional USD 500 as a precaution.

This ensures you're prepared for any extra costs related to emergency situations, unexpected itinerary changes, or other last-minute adjustments. Local currency may be required in these cases.

We are committed to minimizing any inconvenience and will keep you fully informed should anything change during your journey.

13 / What to Pack

Preparing for a cycling adventure in Sri Lanka means being smart about what you bring. Our climate ranges from tropical heat to occasional showers, and your comfort depends on having the right gear. Here’s a handy checklist to ensure you're well-prepared — whether you're cycling coastal roads, highland trails, or ancient city routes.

Main luggage & daily essentials

  • Soft-sided suitcase or duffel bag (medium size): This will be transported in the support vehicle throughout the tour. Hard cases and large suitcases are discouraged due to limited luggage space on the bus.
  • Daypack or cycling backpack: For carrying essentials like snacks, sunscreen, camera, and a light jacket while on the bike. Our support vehicle will remain nearby for access to your main luggage if needed.

Must-have cycling gear

  • Helmet: Wearing a helmet is mandatory. We strongly recommend bringing your own to ensure a proper fit and hygiene. Local availability is limited.
  • Padded cycling shorts: Essential for comfort during long rides.
  • Cycling jerseys or breathable T-shirts: Lightweight, quick-dry fabrics are ideal in Sri Lanka’s warm, humid weather.
  • Cycling gloves: Helps prevent blisters and improves grip. Also useful in case of minor falls.
  • Quick-dry socks: Keeps your feet dry and reduces friction.
  • Cycling shoes or stiff-soled sports shoes: For better pedaling efficiency. Make sure your shoes fully cover your toes (required for safety).
  • Gel seat cover (optional): Some riders find these helpful for extra saddle comfort.

Weather & road-ready items

  • Rain poncho or light waterproof jacket: Sudden tropical showers are common.
  • Windbreaker or lightweight outer layer: For early morning rides or hill descents.
  • Sunglasses: Protects against sun, dust, and insects. Sports-specific ones are best.
  • High-SPF sunscreen: Long days on the road mean extended sun exposure.
  • Reusable water bottle: Our support vehicle carries bulk water for refill stops. Bring at least one cycling-friendly bottle that fits into a bike holder (Camelbak also acceptable).

Optional but useful

  • Clip-in pedals: All our bikes come with flat pedals, but experienced riders may bring their own. We’ll help you fit them.
  • Your own saddle: Standard saddles are fitted, but if you prefer a specific one, feel free to bring it.
  • Bike lights: Not required as we ride during daylight, but you can bring your own if preferred.
  • Images from home: Great for sharing stories with locals — consider bringing small printed photos of your family, home, pets, or country.

Luggage handling reminder

While our tour leader and team assist with luggage during transfers, loading/unloading, and hotel check-ins, it’s important to note that this is a shared responsibility. We kindly ask that you stay alert and ensure your bags are accounted for — especially during hotel departures and when loading onto the support vehicle. Keeping an eye on your own belongings helps avoid delays and ensures nothing gets left behind.

14 / Your Cycling Tour Leader

Every Sri Lanka Cycling Squad journey is led by a licensed Sri Lanka National Tourist Guide Lecturer — the highest professional qualification for tour leaders in the country. Certified by the Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority (SLTDA), these professionals are fully authorised to guide at all historical, cultural, and natural sites in Sri Lanka. With extensive training and official certification, they bring a unique combination of deep local insight and world-class hospitality to your cycling adventure.

Why Our Tour Leaders Stand Out

  • Expert Cyclists: Skilled riders trained in road safety, basic bike repairs, and first aid.
  • Cultural Specialists: Qualified to interpret all sites nationwide — from UNESCO World Heritage landmarks to hidden rural treasures.
  • Fluent Communicators: English-speaking guides, often with additional language abilities.
  • Locally Connected: Able to recommend authentic restaurants, arrange optional activities, and assist in unexpected situations.

From hotel check-ins to roadside snack stops, your leader ensures every detail is taken care of. While they manage the logistics, we encourage guests to take personal responsibility for their belongings and travel experience — because a great tour is always a team effort between guide and guests.

With professionalism, passion, and the highest guiding credentials in Sri Lanka, your guide ensures every ride is safe, insightful, and truly unforgettable.

15 / Safety on Our Cycling Tours

At Sri Lanka Cycling Squad, your safety is our highest priority. Every tour is designed with professional standards, careful planning, and experienced leadership so you can enjoy the ride with confidence. While cycling in Sri Lanka is an incredible adventure, it comes with its own unique conditions — and we’re here to make sure you’re prepared.

Helmets – Your Essential Protection

For your safety, wearing a helmet is mandatory for all riders, including our team. You’re welcome to bring your own, but if you need one, we can help you purchase a helmet locally that meets recognised international safety standards.

Footwear – Ride Ready

We strongly recommend closed-toe shoes for every ride. Proper footwear not only improves your comfort but also helps protect your feet in case of slips or unexpected terrain changes.

Support Vehicle – Always Nearby

A dedicated support vehicle travels with us during our cycling days. It’s there if you need first aid, feel too tired to continue, or if weather or road conditions require us to alter our route. Your safety and comfort always come first.

Bikes – Well-Maintained and Reliable

Our fleet of bikes is regularly serviced and inspected by skilled mechanics before each tour. If you prefer to bring your own bike, you are responsible for its condition and safety, though our leaders will gladly offer basic repair assistance if needed.

Traffic Awareness – Adapting to Sri Lanka’s Roads

In Sri Lanka, vehicles drive on the left-hand side of the road. Traffic can be busy and less predictable than in some countries, so staying alert is important. Your leader will guide you through busier areas and decide if any sections should be done in the support vehicle for safety.

Weather – Flexible and Prepared

Sri Lanka’s tropical climate can change quickly. If heavy rain, extreme heat, or strong winds make cycling unsafe, we may adjust our route or use the support vehicle instead. Whenever possible, we’ll find alternative riding paths to keep your day active and enjoyable.

16 / Respect, Group Etiquette & Inclusion

Respect for Fellow Travellers & Communities

At Sri Lanka Cycling Squad, we believe that a successful cycling tour is built on mutual respect. Our guests come from many cultures, backgrounds, and walks of life, and we expect everyone to treat each other — and the communities we visit — with courtesy, kindness, and understanding. This means:

  • Listening to others’ perspectives and being open to cultural differences.
  • Following local customs where appropriate, especially in religious or traditional settings.
  • Avoiding behaviour that could be considered disruptive, offensive, or disrespectful.

We take a zero-tolerance approach to harassment, discrimination, and intimidation. Our leaders are trained to step in immediately if behaviour threatens the safety, comfort, or dignity of anyone in the group.

Group Travel Etiquette

Cycling in a group can be one of the most rewarding travel experiences — you share the joy of the ride, the scenery, and the discoveries along the way. It also requires cooperation, patience, and flexibility.

  • Be punctual for all departures, meals, and activities so the group can stay on schedule.
  • Follow your leader’s guidance — their decisions are based on safety, logistics, and experience.
  • Be adaptable when plans change due to weather, traffic, or other unforeseen circumstances.
  • Share the space — whether it’s the road, a dining table, or the support vehicle.

A harmonious group dynamic is one of the keys to an unforgettable journey. Your contribution — no matter how small — helps keep the spirit positive and the trip running smoothly.

Solo Travellers & Room Sharing

Many of our guests travel solo, and you’ll always find a warm welcome with Sri Lanka Cycling Squad. Accommodation is typically arranged on a twin-share basis, pairing you with another guest of the same gender for the duration of the tour.

  • If you’d like your own private space, we offer a Single Supplement option that can be booked in advance (subject to availability).
  • Our pairing process respects personal comfort and privacy — if any concerns arise, speak to your leader immediately.
  • All rooming arrangements are handled with professionalism and discretion, ensuring a safe and respectful environment for every traveller.

LGBTQIA+ Inclusion

Sri Lanka Cycling Squad is committed to being a safe, inclusive, and welcoming space for all travellers, regardless of gender identity, sexual orientation, or background.

  • If your gender identity differs from what’s on your passport, let us know before the trip so we can arrange rooming that matches your comfort and privacy preferences.
  • Our team and leaders are trained to ensure that every guest feels respected and supported throughout the journey.
  • We actively work with accommodation and service providers who share our values of equality and non-discrimination.

Whether you’re riding solo, travelling with friends, or joining us as part of a couple, you can be assured that our tours are built on respect, safety, and community for everyone.

17 / Travel Insurance

At Sri Lanka Cycling Squad, your safety and comfort are just as important as the adventure itself. Cycling through Sri Lanka’s stunning coastlines, lush countryside, and vibrant towns is an unforgettable experience — and the right travel insurance ensures that nothing gets in the way of enjoying it to the fullest.

What Your Policy Should Include

For international guests, we require travel insurance that covers:

  • Medical treatment in Sri Lanka for illness or injury
  • Emergency evacuation and repatriation (including air ambulance if needed)
  • 24-hour emergency assistance contact

Your tour leader will check your insurance details — including your policy number and emergency contact — at the start of the trip so we can keep everything running smoothly.

Recommended Extra Cover

For added peace of mind, we suggest including:

  • Trip cancellation or curtailment
  • Loss or theft of luggage, electronics, or personal items
  • Personal liability protection

Why It’s Useful in Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka offers excellent private medical care, but treatment usually requires upfront payment. Having insurance means you can receive the best care quickly, without delays.

Some of our most scenic rides take us through beautifully remote areas — having emergency evacuation cover ensures you can be transported comfortably to quality medical facilities if needed, so you can ride with complete confidence.

If You Have Credit Card Insurance

If your cover is provided by a credit card, please bring:

  • The insurer or underwriter’s name
  • Level of coverage
  • Policy number
  • 24-hour emergency contact number

Responsible Travel – Cycling with Care in Sri Lanka

At Sri Lanka Cycling Squad, we believe that great adventures should leave a positive impact on the places we visit and the people we meet. Our Responsible Travel approach is built around four key principles:

  • Preserving the environment by minimising waste and protecting natural spaces
  • Supporting local communities through fair partnerships and authentic experiences
  • Respecting cultural heritage and traditions
  • Protecting wildlife and promoting ethical tourism practices

Our tour leaders, suppliers, and partners are all trained in these principles, ensuring that every ride you take with us supports a more sustainable future for Sri Lanka’s people, culture, and environment.

Local Dress & Cultural Respect

Sri Lanka is generally modest in its dress customs, especially in rural areas and at religious sites. To show respect and stay comfortable in the warm climate, we recommend:

  • Clothing that covers shoulders and knees when visiting villages, markets, or cultural sites
  • Lightweight, loose fabrics that keep you cool while meeting cultural expectations
  • For temple visits, men should wear long trousers and women a long skirt, dress, or sarong
  • Swimwear is fine at beaches and resort pools, but topless sunbathing is not accepted anywhere in Sri Lanka

Wildlife & Animal Welfare

We love Sri Lanka’s wildlife and are committed to ethical, cruelty-free encounters. Our tours never include activities such as elephant riding, performances, or any experience that compromises animal welfare. Instead, we support reputable sanctuaries and conservation-focused experiences where animals live in environments that respect their natural behaviours.

If you’d like to see elephants during your trip, we can recommend ethical options such as national park safaris or visiting recognised conservation areas where elephants roam freely. By choosing responsible experiences, we help protect these magnificent creatures and ensure future generations can enjoy them in the wild.

Responsible travel isn’t just a policy — it’s how we ride. Every kilometre you cycle with Sri Lanka Cycling Squad helps support local livelihoods, preserve nature, and keep Sri Lanka’s traditions and wildlife thriving.
