Ride Sri Lanka your way — safe, personal, and unforgettable.
No race goals. No elite requirements. Just scenic routes, great company, and flexible rides that match your energy each day.
Our cycling holidays in Sri Lanka are about connection with the land, the people, and the journey itself. Every rider is welcome, from first-time riders and retirees on e-bikes to experienced cyclists seeking adventure.
Cycle through ancient cities, rural hamlets, rolling tea estates, shimmering lagoons, and golden beaches, guided by locals who know the stories behind every road. Unlike many other Sri Lanka bike tours, our journey also takes you north, where palmyra palms, bustling markets, and coastal charm reveal a side of the island few travelers ever reach.
Choose a gentle ride on an e-bike or opt for a longer one if you’re feeling strong. Evenings bring warm hospitality, small-group comfort, and the reassurance of a support vehicle close by.
With Sri Lanka Cycling Squad, cycling is safe, authentic, and welcoming. Saddle up and discover stories, smiles, and scenery you’ll never forget.

CONTACT OUR TEAMWe've carefully crafted this journey to showcase the very best of Sri Lanka on two wheels. From quiet northern roads and iconic cultural landmarks to scenic train journeys and genuine local encounters, every day offers a new perspective and a memorable experience.
Few cycling holidays venture this far north. Ride peaceful coastal roads, take the ferry to the sacred island of Nagadipa, explore the unique culture of Jaffna, and experience a quieter side of Sri Lanka that many visitors never discover.
Two scenic train journeys are part of the adventure, connecting distant regions while giving you time to relax and enjoy some of Sri Lanka's most beautiful railway landscapes before continuing on two wheels.
From the ancient capital of Anuradhapura and the iconic Sigiriya Rock Fortress to the sacred city of Kandy, every stop reveals another chapter of Sri Lanka's remarkable story, blending UNESCO World Heritage Sites, living traditions and breathtaking landscapes into one unforgettable journey.
Cycle through misty tea plantations, descend into the wildlife-rich landscapes around Tissamaharama, then unwind on the golden beaches of Mirissa before finishing your adventure in Colombo. Few journeys reveal so many different sides of Sri Lanka in just two weeks.
Sri Lankan cuisine is as diverse as the landscapes you'll cycle through. Enjoy freshly prepared rice and curry, tropical fruits, fragrant spices and regional specialities, with meals that introduce you to the authentic flavours and warm hospitality of every destination along the journey.
The memories you'll treasure most often aren't the famous landmarks—they're the unexpected moments. A smile from a farmer as you cycle past, children waving from village roads, sharing tea with a local family, or chatting with fishermen as they bring in the day's catch. These genuine encounters turn a great ride into an unforgettable journey.
Your daily guide to the adventure ahead, carefully crafted to showcase the best of Sri Lanka.
Ayu-bowan! Welcome to Sri Lanka.
Your journey begins in the laid-back coastal town of Negombo, just a short drive from Bandaranaike International Airport. With golden beaches, colorful fishing boats, and lively markets, Negombo offers the perfect first taste of island life and the ideal starting point for your cycling holiday in Sri Lanka.
After settling into your hotel, you’ll have time to rest or explore at your own pace. Wander the canals built by the Dutch, stroll through the bustling fish market, or simply enjoy the tropical sea breeze. In the evening, meet your leader and fellow riders for a welcome briefing where you’ll go through the journey ahead and get fitted with your bikes.
For dinner, you may choose to join your leader at a local restaurant for fresh seafood or authentic Sri Lankan curries, or head out on your own to explore Negombo’s food scene. Either way, this first evening sets the tone for an unforgettable cycling adventure in Sri Lanka.
Accommodation: Comfortable hotel in Negombo (1 night)

After breakfast, your cycling holiday in Sri Lanka begins with a 35 km ride along the west coast. This gentle route passes fishing villages, coconut plantations, and palm-shaded lanes, an easy warm-up that lets you settle into your bike and soak in the rhythm of island life.
From Chilaw, we continue by vehicle inland toward Anuradhapura, stopping en route for a traditional Sri Lankan lunch. The drive takes about 3.5 hours, offering time to rest before diving into the cultural highlights.
Before checking into the hotel, we step back 2,000 years with a guided visit to Anuradhapura, Sri Lanka’s first ancient capital and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Here you’ll encounter giant stupas, sacred Bodhi trees, ancient monasteries, and the ingenious reservoirs that powered one of Asia’s greatest civilizations. It’s a powerful reminder of the island’s rich history and a highlight of any cycling tour in Sri Lanka.
By evening, we’ll check into a comfortable hotel in Anuradhapura. After such a full and rewarding day, most travelers prefer a relaxed dinner at the hotel’s restaurant, though your leader can suggest local dining options if you’d like to explore further.
Accommodation: Comfortable hotel in Anuradhapura (1 night)
Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch
Ride Details: Approx. 35 km (22 mi) | Flat terrain | Gentle elevation (about 150 m / 500 ft). A relaxed coastal ride through fishing villages, coconut groves, and palm-shaded roads. an ideal warm-up for the journey ahead.
After breakfast, we board a comfortable train for the 3-hour journey from Anuradhapura to Jaffna, a relaxing ride that offers glimpses of Sri Lanka’s northern landscapes — palm groves, lagoons, and open countryside that feel distinctly different from the south. The journey into Jaffna takes us across Elephant Pass, once a strategic point during Sri Lanka’s civil conflict. Today, it stands as a symbol of resilience, and crossing into the peninsula offers a powerful reminder of how history has shaped this unique region.
On arrival, we enjoy a traditional Tamil lunch at a local restaurant or family-run home, giving you the chance to experience Jaffna’s famous hospitality and flavors. Afterwards, we transfer to our hotel and take some time to rest before the afternoon ride.
In the late afternoon, we cycle from a designated starting point to Point Pedro, the northernmost tip of Sri Lanka. This 25–30 km ride passes fishing villages, palmyra-lined roads, and stretches of windswept coast, offering a unique insight into life at the edge of the island. After reaching the landmark, we return to Jaffna by vehicle.
Dinner tonight is included and served at the hotel, where you can unwind after a day that blends rail travel, cycling, history, and cultural immersion.

An afternoon coastal ride to Point Pedro, the northernmost point of Sri Lanka.
We start early this morning to make the most of the cooler hours, setting off on a gentle cycling ride from Jaffna toward Kurikadduwan Jetty. The ride covers approximately 30 km on flat terrain, passing through quiet villages, palmyra-lined roads, and stretches of rural northern landscapes that offer a peaceful and authentic cycling experience.
On arrival at the jetty, we board a local ferry to Nainativu Island, a place of deep spiritual importance and shared religious harmony. The island is home to Nagadeepa Purana Vihara, one of Sri Lanka’s most sacred Buddhist temples, as well as the revered Nagadipa Amman Kovil. Remarkably, these religious sites still stand as symbols of faith and resilience, having survived decades of civil conflict.
After exploring the temples and spending time on the island, we return by ferry to Kurikadduwan Jetty, where our support vehicle meets us for the transfer back to the hotel. This combination of cycling, ferry travel, and cultural exploration offers a unique perspective on northern Sri Lanka that few travelers experience.
In the afternoon, we slow the pace and explore Jaffna on foot. A guided walk through the town and local market introduces you to everyday northern life — colorful produce stalls, friendly conversations, and the distinctive rhythm of Jaffna’s streets. Lunch is enjoyed at a local restaurant, offering a taste of traditional northern Tamil cuisine.
Later, we visit the iconic Nallur Kandaswamy Temple, the spiritual heart of Jaffna. Its towering gopuram, intricate details, and vibrant atmosphere provide a memorable cultural highlight and a deeper understanding of Hindu traditions in Sri Lanka.
The evening is free to relax back at the hotel, reflecting on a day that blends cycling, spirituality, history, and local life in a truly meaningful way.

A scenic morning ride followed by ferry access to sacred islands and cultural landmarks
We begin the day with a scenic cycling ride directly from our hotel, heading west toward Pooneryn via the impressive Sangupiddy Bridge. This approximately 35 km ride follows flat, quiet roads and offers one of the most peaceful cycling experiences in northern Sri Lanka.
As we pedal through this remote landscape, the scenery gradually opens up to wide lagoons, salt flats, mangrove edges, and long stretches of open sky. With very little traffic and refreshing coastal breezes, the ride feels calm and expansive — a perfect farewell to the north. Fishing boats, water birds, and shimmering lagoon waters add to the sense of riding through an untouched corner of the island.
Reaching Pooneryn, we load the bikes and continue by vehicle toward Dambulla. Today’s drive is one of the longer transfers of the journey, taking approximately four hours. Lunch is enjoyed along the way at a local restaurant, allowing time to relax and recharge.
We arrive in Dambulla in the afternoon, where the remainder of the day is free. You may choose to rest at the hotel, enjoy the pool, or explore the town at your own pace, preparing for the cultural highlights that await in the coming days.

A peaceful coastal-lagoon ride followed by a transfer into Sri Lanka’s cultural heartlands
For those who wish to make the most of the afternoon, an optional jeep safari to one of the nearby national parks, renowned for their large populations of wild elephants, is available. Parks such as Minneriya National Park or Kaudulla National Park are located within a reasonable driving distance from Dambulla and offer excellent opportunities to observe elephants in their natural habitat.
Depending on seasonal movements, herds may be seen gathering around reservoirs and grasslands, especially in the late afternoon when wildlife activity increases. The safari is conducted in a 4WD jeep with a local tracker and typically lasts 2–3 hours.
Participation is entirely optional and can be arranged locally, allowing guests to choose between relaxing at the hotel or embarking on an unforgettable wildlife experience.
Today begins early with a 5:00 AM departure to Sigiriya Rock Fortress, arriving before sunrise to enjoy the site in cooler temperatures and a peaceful atmosphere.
We climb through the ancient water gardens and boulder gardens before reaching the Lion’s Paw terrace and continuing to the summit. From the top, wide views stretch across forests and villages as the morning light spreads over the landscape. The climb includes staircases and some narrow sections with metal steps and handrails. Guests who prefer not to climb all the way can remain at the Lion’s Paw terrace.
After descending, we enjoy breakfast nearby before starting today’s ride.
Late in the morning, we cycle approximately 45 km along quiet countryside roads through traditional villages and paddy fields. The terrain is mostly flat with a few gentle climbs, offering a relaxed and scenic ride.
After the ride, we transfer by vehicle toward Kandy, stopping at a spice garden near Matale and enjoying lunch along the way. The drive takes about three hours including stops.
In the afternoon, we visit the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic in Kandy before checking into our hotel.

The tour concludes with a tea tasting session, where you can sample a selection of locally produced teas.
We return to Kandy for lunch at Hela Bojun, a community-based social enterprise supporting local women and traditional Sri Lankan cuisine.

Scenic rail, highland climbs & a taste of Tamil hospitality
After breakfast, we transfer to Kandy railway station and board one of the island’s most scenic train journeys - winding through rolling hills, misty forests and emerald tea plantations on the way to Hatton. Upon arrival, we gear up for a rewarding highland ride through the central hills toward Maskeliya.
Today’s cycling route with a mix of gradual and occasionally steeper sections as we ascend into the heart of tea country. After approximately 16 km, we’ll stop for a scenic picnic featuring an authentic Tamil meal, freshly prepared at a small local kiosk.
After lunch, the ride continues - capping off with a downhill section over the final 7 km before we reach our accommodation in Hatton. The afternoon is free for you to relax and enjoy the cool, peaceful surroundings.
Optional Adam's Peak Trek:
For those seeking a bigger challenge, there’s an optional trek to Adam’s Peak. This experience requires finishing the ride early - after about 25 km - where you’ll break from the group and travel by private transport (approx. 1 hour) to Dalhousie. From there, a licensed local trekker will guide you on the climb. This Trek is not included and must be arranged separately; your tour leader can assist you with information on cost and logistics, including transport and guide arrangements.
Adam’s Peak is a sacred pilgrimage site, with the main season running from December full moon (Unduwap Poya) to May full moon (Vesak Poya). During this period, the trail is illuminated, and many locals make the nighttime climb to witness sunrise from the summit. Outside of this season, weather conditions may make the Trek more difficult and less predictable.

Scenic descents, small towns & the southern lowlands
After a hearty breakfast, we begin one of the most picturesque rides of the trip— cycling through the heart of tea country from Dikoya to Balangoda. Though the distance is short, the scenery is unforgettable. You'll roll past emerald-green tea plantations, pine forests, misty hills, and charming Tamil towns, all set against a stunning mountain backdrop.
The route includes a mix of smooth tarmac and broken mountain roads, with gentle gradients that let you take in the sights at a comfortable pace. Birdsong, waterfalls, and friendly locals along the way add even more richness to the ride.
We stop near Balangoda for lunch, surrounded by the highland atmosphere. From here, we travel by vehicle to Tissamaharama in the island’s southern dry zone. On arrival, settle in at the hotel and relax. In the evening, enjoy a group dinner and reflect on the journey so far.

After breakfast, we hop on our bikes for a peaceful morning ride from Tissamaharama to Kataragama - a sacred pilgrimage town revered by Buddhists, Hindus, and Muslims alike. As one of Sri Lanka’s most important spiritual sites, Kataragama bursts with colour, incense, and religious devotion, especially during its famous July/August festival. Pedalling along tree-lined village roads offers a glimpse into daily life in the south and a chance to absorb the region’s cultural richness.
After exploring Kataragama, we trade our bikes for jeeps and head into the wilderness of Yala National Park—one of the best places in the world to spot the elusive leopard. Along with leopards, Yala is home to wild elephants, crocodiles, sloth bears, buffalo, and a wide variety of birdlife, including peacocks and the great thick-knee.
Depending on seasonal conditions and responsible tourism guidelines, we usually explore Yala Block 5, a quieter and less-visited section of the park. If this area is also deemed too crowded or during the park’s annual closure in September and October, we may visit Udawalawe National Park or Bundala National Park instead - both renowned for their own unique wildlife experiences.
We return to Tissamaharama by evening for a relaxed group dinner and reflection on the day’s contrasting highlights: sacred sites and untamed wilderness.

National Park Visit Notes:
Yala Block 5 is our preferred route to help reduce tourism pressure on the more crowded areas of the park.
During September and October, when Yala is closed for rejuvenation, we visit Bundala National Park, a Ramsar-listed wetland sanctuary.
If Yala’s visitor load becomes unsustainable, we will shift to Udawalawe National Park, known for its large elephant population and excellent wildlife sightings.
Ride through rich birdlife and salt plains before heading to the beach.
After breakfast, set off on your final cycling stretch of the journey. Today’s ride takes you from Tissamaharama to Hambantota, passing through the unique landscapes of Bundala National Park - a Ramsar wetland known for its migratory birds, salt flats, and shimmering lagoons. It’s a peaceful route with open skies, occasional wildlife sightings, and a flat, relaxed pace.
After arriving in Hambantota, enjoy lunch and then transfer by vehicle to the coastal town of Mirissa, a drive of approximately 1.5 hours.
The rest of the afternoon is yours to relax. Mirissa is one of Sri Lanka’s most beautiful beach destinations, perfect for a refreshing swim, catching the sunset, or simply unwinding after your rewarding journey.
